Chandigarh, JULY 9, 2020: Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday filed a plea in a special CBI court asking it to stop Punjab Police from carrying out a parallel investigation into sacrilege cases.
This comes after the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Punjab Police had named Dera Sacha Sauda head Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh an accused in the theft of a bir of Guru Granth Sahib in 2015.
In its plea, the CBI said it was still probing the cases and that two agencies can’t simultaneously investigate the same cases, which went against the procedure of law.
The court has issued notice to Punjab Police and other parties and the next hearing in the case will be on July 10.
The previous SAD-BJP government had called in CBI to investigate 2015 sacrilege incidents.
On July 4, 2019 CBI filed a closure report and gave a clean chit to some dera followers who were arrested on July 4 this year by the SIT headed by Deputy Inspector General Ranbir Singh Khatra.
