Punjab has the highest number of Arms licence holders in country
Checking of firearms becomes a priority for the state government to ensure peace, law and order
Ludhiana, May 29, 2017: Punjab has the highest number of arms licence holders in the country. That is why checking of firearms within the state of Punjab, becomes a priority area for the state government to ensure peace, harmony and law & order for the citizens at large.
A state database of arms licences is being created, disclosed Inspector General of Police (Crime) Shashi Prabha during technical workshop held at Police Academy Phillaur near Ludhiana on Monday.
She informed that the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has notified in Rule 11 of the Arms Rules, 2016 for generation of Unique Identification Number (UIN) for every arms licensee in NDAL-ALIS (National Database of Arms License – Arms License Issuance) system developed by National Informatics Center (NIC) with the objective to check proliferation and misuse of arms and ammunition.
Such proliferation is being viewed as a serious challenge to the internal security of the country and providing the proposed UIN would create/update a dynamic central database of the arms licenses issued across the country.
Being a border state and having faced black days of terrorism, a database on arms becomes a priority for the state government.
To meet these objectives, DGP Punjab ordered to conduct state level technical workshops of the licensing authorities and District Police Chiefs to apprise them of the technical aspects of the provisions of the Arms Act, 1959 and the Arms Rules, 2016.
As part of this, the first state level technical workshop was organized at Patiala. The fourth and last one was today, May 29 conducted at the Punjab Police Academy, Phillaur. The workshop was attended by senior police and civil officers including CPs, DCs, DIG, SSP of Ludhiana and Jalandhar Ranges.
