DCW chairperson also wrote a letter to the chairperson of Punjab Women Commission seeking details of such cases happening in Punjab
Chandigarh, July 21, 2017: In a press conference held in Chandigarh on Friday DCW Chairperson Swati Jaihind said that she is a part of an expert committee set up by Union External Affairs Minister Smt Sushma Swaraj to solve NRI marriages disputes. Smt Swati Maliwal is visiting Chandigarh to collect data on such cases happening in Punjab.
She said that cases of NRI husbands abandoning their Indian brides after marriage were reported mostly from Punjab. In this regard she had a detailed discussion with Retd. Justice Rakesh Garg, the chairperson of Punjab NRI commission and member Shri Anil Kumar.
She said that the meeting with the NRI commission was very fruitful and she has given some really good suggestions to the commission. She also wrote a letter to the chairperson of Punjab Women Commission seeking details of such cases happening in Punjab. She also asked for suggestions in this matter from her.
She said that if today a boy abandons his bride after marriage and flees the country it is very difficult to get him back in the country. This is the reason we need stricter laws against NRI husbands who abandoned their Indian brides after marriage. She said that most people from Punjab stay abroad hence numbers of such cases reported from Punjab are maximum.
She said that like Punjab other states in India should also have a NRI commission who is as powerful as the National Human Rights Commission. There should be a NRI commission at the national level and all NRI marriages should be registered with the commission.
Smt Swati Jaihind said that she is visiting Punjab and other state women commission as well as NRI commission before submitting her report to the central NRI marriage and dispute committee. She said that she will base her report on the data provided by the Punjab Women Commission and reports from other state women commission. Smt Swati Jaihind is seeking opinions on this matter from public too and she has urged people to send their suggestions to nri.dcw@gmail.com. She said that suggestions are welcomed from men too and the laws will be made so that both men and women get justice.
