BJP Under Pressure, Chandigarh Police In Dock, Congress Intensifies protests
By Vijay Pal Brar/Raju William
Chandigarh, August 7, 2017: The BJP seems to be coming under increasing pressure amid allegations of protecting the son of its Haryana unit chief in the highly publicized Chandigarh stalking case in which the victim happens to be the daughter of a senior IAS officer.
The BJP’s discomfort is likely to increase after the reported move of its Rajya Sabha member Subramanian Swamy to file PIL in the case alleging the failure of the Chandigarh police in adhering to the required provision of the law to protect the rights and safety of the victim.
The case has already taken the national centrestage amid widespread condemnation growing since August 5 when the Chandfigarh police, which is under control of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, dropped the stricter provisions of the law.
The police allegedly dropped the charge of abduction attempt and let off the accused son of Haryana BJP chief Subhash Barala and his friend for a bailable offence. The victim was allegedly stalked for about seven kilometers and survived an abduction attempt at midnight on August 4.
The victim and her father took to social media to narrate the ordeal and alleged the attempt was made to abduct her by the drunken accused.
The political fallout of the incident was imminent since the accused included son of the state BJP bigwig. The demand made by the Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi for action against the accused served to bring the case into the national political focus. The reported move by BJP MP Swamy to file a PIL contributed further to sharpen the focus.
Adding to the rising political pressure, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh also condemned the alleged dilution of charges against the accused.
Responding to a media query after a function in the national capital on Monday, he stated the police must act on the statement of the victim irrespective of the police claim of non-availability of the CCTV footage due to non-functional cameras at traffic points on the road on which the victim was stalked.
Meanwhile, the Chandigarh Congress organized a protest by making a human chain at Tribune Chowk on Monday. Its president Pardeep Chhabra alleged the Chandigarh police was acting at the behest of the BJP government. He demanded a probe into the case by a sitting Judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Though Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar condemned the incident but rejected the demand of resignation of Subhash Barala from the post of the state BJP chief. Chandigarh BJP MP Kirron Kher termed the incident as unfortunate but, at the same time, criticized the political colour being given to it.
