Nawanshahr, August 17, 2017: Yadvir Singh, US born Punjabi teenager, has set a worth emulating unique trend by participating in the " Chhinj Mela" ( Rural Wrestling competition) at village Shekhupur Bag in Nawanshahr district. Yadvir ( 19 years), originally belongs to village Majhoor. He is presently on visit to his native village along with his parents - Harjinder Singh and Kashmir Kaur. He has come to Punjab after 12 years. He has been practising wrestling in San Jose ( US) since the age of 10 years.
" In rural Punjab, the ' Chhinj Melas' are organised at a number of villages. Yadvir, a wrestler, who has been showing quest to have insight into the culture of Punjab, expressed his wish to participate in the ' Chhinj' ( Wrestling competition). Keeping in mind the huge difference between the infrastructure facilities here, he has some reservations but Yadvir was quite enthusiastic to participate to feel the pulse of rustic Punjab, his native place", said Harjinder Singh, adding that Yadvir participated in the Wrestling competition with zest and defeated 35 years old professional wrestler from Haryana in the competition.
Captain Darshan Singh Majhoor, grand father of Yadvir also expressed his gratitude to the organisers of " Chhinj Mela" for permitting his grandson to participate in the competition.
Sharing his experiences with Babushahi, Yadvir said that was quite elated to be part of the culture and traditions of his native land. " Though there is lot of difference in the wrestling techniques than those in US, but he has learnt a lot. It was a tough task to defeat a wrestler having a rock like body", he further said.
Nawanshahr MLA, Angad Singh while lauding the spirit exhibited by Yadvir Singh, exhorted the new generation of Punjabi diaspora to get motivated from it. " It is the need of the hour that the new generation of Punjabi diaspora should come forward to get themselves connected to their roots. Yadvir Singh has exhibited worth emulating exemplary spirit and has shown the way how the new generation could feel the fragrance of the glorious traditions and rich heritage of Punjab.
