Ludhiana, 20 September, 2017: An 11 day long mega Regional SARAS mela is going to commence from 5th October in PAU mela ground with a view to promoting cultural, traditional and rich heritage values of different states.
SARAS extravaganza would witness more than 230 stalls of self help groups from across the country besides having cultural activities, magic shows, entertaining and recreational activities for children. The mela would display various performances of artistes from Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Jammu and Kashmir, Mizoram, Manipur, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Haryana, West Bengal during the 11 days long activities. The self help groups would exhibit products made by their own vis-à-vis other art and craft goods.
This was stated by the Nodal officer of this mega event Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development) Surabhi Malik after reviewing the ongoing preparations.
Surabhi Malik told APS Brar “We have held multiple meetings both on and off site on ground regarding preparation of designs and maps, tenders and auctions, cultural events, publicity, decoration and sponsorships”. We are trying to make it great show, said Surabhi Malik.
She informed that purpose of this event to provide a platform to rural craftsmanship under the aegis of Union Rural Development Ministry in collaboration with Punjab Government. She said that this event was not only providing best and direct opportunities to sell the goods being prepared by craftsmen but also increase the employment avenues. She said that with the promotion of Rural Development this mega event was also promoting tourism in a big way. She said that more than 22 states were participating in SARAS mela.
Surabhi Malik further told APS “We have taken several new steps to make it more transparent. For the first time e-tenders and e-auctions have been done for Ludhiana SARAS, bringing the use of technology for greater transparency”.
We have engaged an artist to look after rural décor theme aside from usual tent decorations and create multiple selfi-points disclosed Surabhi Malik.
Surabhi Malik said that SARAS festival was a healthy platform for the craftsman and artisans from across the country to exhibit their rare talent through the handicrafts. She said that these handicrafts were the part of the rich legacy of the vibrant culture of our country.
Giving details, she said that cultural activities would be changed daily as the District Administration had engaged renowned artists, singers and Ghazal masters.
She also extended an appeal to people of Ludhiana and other districts for their healthy participation.
