On December 1, 2014, Brijgopal Harkishan Loya died in Nagpur. He was presiding over Sohrabuddin Sheikh trial in Mumbai CBI special court.
The shocking questions raised by his family over his death in the two-part story published by The Caravan magazine have brought the case back into media focus.
The case Loya was handling was high profile one since the BJP national president Amit Shah was one of the primary accused in the charge sheet filed in a Gujarat court by the CBI in July 2010.
However, the judge, who had replaced Loya after his death, dropped all charges against Shah in December, 2014 after hearing his discharge petition.
Shah was Minister of State for Home in Gujarat when the Sohrabuddin 'fake encounter' took place in November 2005.
In September 2012, the Supreme Court had shifted the trial to Mumbai with directions that it be heard by the same judge from beginning till conclusion.
The post-mortem report said that Loya had died due to heart attack.
