Chandigarh, December 7, 2017: The process of MC election in four places in the state has been temporarily stayed by the State Election Commission (SEC)
State Election Commissioner Jagpal Singh Sandhu told babushahi.com that the scrutiny of nominations, which was to start at 11 am on Thursday, had been stopped at Baghapurana in Moga district, Ghanaur in Patiala district , Mallanwala and Makhu in Ferozeopur district.
The action comes in the wake of complaints of violence and other irregularities lodged by Akali Dal. On Wednesday, firing incident was reported in Mallanwala in which an Akali leader was also injured.
The SEC had asked for report from the concerned Deputy Commissioners which did not reach the SEC office by 10 am on Thursday. Therefore, as a temporary measure the scrutiny process was stopped.
The final decision will be taken after receiving the Deputy Commissioners' report, added Sandhu.
The election panel is empowered to effect changes in the election process depending on the prevailing situation in any election-bound civic body.
Sandhu asserted that the entire election process was being conducted as per rules and in a transparent and unbiased manner
