Chandigarh, April 19, 2018: The state police authorities have sent a proposal to the Cabinet to allow international athlete Mandeep Kaur to join back as the DSP in the Punjab Police after she acquires required educational qualification.
Gold medallist in the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games, Mandeep Kaur was demoted to the post of a constable after her graduation degree was found unvalid. She had been working as the DSP for 15 months after her induction into the Punjab Police as the DSP on sports basis.
A resident of village Cheema Khurd of Tarn Taran district, Mandeep was among the nine sportspersons who were appointed as the DSP in the Punjab Police by SAD-BJP government in December 2016.
DGP Punjab Suresh Arora on Thursday said that a proposal from his office had been sent for Cabinet approval to reinstate her on the post of DSP after completion of the required BA degree course to be educationally eligible for the post. She has cleared BA Part I and her degree studies will be completed in the next two years.
Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, who also holds the Home portfolio, had given nod to remove her from the DSP’s post after the fact of her degree document was found as unvalid. She had then made a written request let her continue on the post till she completes the required qualification.
She had acquired the unvalid degree from some institution in Sikkam which had not been a recognized one. She had pleaded innocence saying that she did not know the said institution was not approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
