New York, June 28, 2018: Strange as it may sound, the problem of farmers distress and resultant suicides is impacting, to the alarming proportion, even the most developed economy like the US.
The startling fact has come to light through a report by Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the US.
The report based on the study of farming community in the 17 States of the US showed that more suicides had been reported from among the farming community than the people involved in other occupations.
The rate of suicides those involved in agriculture and fish farming is 84.5% every 100,000 persons. The incidence of suicides has increased in the last 30 years in the US, said the report.
Lack of remunerative prices and crop damage due to natural factors is being cited as the major cause of farmers’ suicides all over the world. Since 2013, the income level of the US farmers has shown consistent decline.
