Latest Endovascular procedure restores confidence of a young girl

Ludhiana, July 17, 2018: 12-year-old Tejaswini (name changed) had a growth on her face which had been operated upon twice but had recurred. It had started bleeding at an alarming rate.
It was then that her worried parents brought her for consultation and treatment to Dr Harinder Singh Bedi – Chairman of Cardio Vascular Endovascular and Thoracic Surgery at the Ludhiana Mediways Hospital in Ludhiana.
After a thorough examination and investigations Dr Bedi realized that Tejaswini had a large recurrent venous malformation in her left cheek with bleeding. Such a lesion cannot be adequately treated with conventional surgery as it will grow back – as it had done in this case. Her CT and MRI showed the growth to be extensive and involving the surrounding tissues .
Even prior to the bleeding Tejaswini had been always very embarrassed by the growth which was immediately visible on her face . She would face either pity or ridicule from her colleagues at school.
A relatively new procedure called endovascular duplex and flouro guided sclerotherapy was planned. Dr Bedi explained that this entails careful injection of a sclerosing agent exactly into the diseased areas. “This requires a high degree of expertise and a precise imaging technology. The bleeding immediately stopped and the growth shrank down,” said Dr Bedi.
The growths on the facial area cannot be tackled with open surgery as they can leave disfiguring scars. Even otherwise open surgery is not very effective against such lesions . Endovascular techniques, of which Dr Bedi is an expert, are a boon to patients with such pathologies. He is one of the senior most members of the prestigious Vascular Society of India.
Tejaswini is now a confident, happy child and is back to school. Her parents were extremely grateful that such a technique is now available in Punjab.
