Path Breaking Trend : A Convent School invites Government School students to hold "Math Mela"

The innovative activity oriented teaching techniques devised under the " Parho Punjab, Parhao Punjab" project have started setting path breaking trends. It could easily be gauged from the fact that the principal of the Saint Francis Convent School, Batala ( Gurdaspur) has invited the students of the Government Senior Secondary School, Batala to hold " Math Mela" on its school premises by making a request to the school principal.
It is worthwhile to mention here that the " Parho Punjab, Parhao Punjab" project, is aimed at bringing in qualitative improvement in class room teaching . Under it, new student friendly teaching techniques based activities have been evolved to ensure understanding of the basic concepts of Mathematics in an interesting and effective way. The teachers of the government schools have not only been guiding their students to prepare different activities and working models to learn basic concepts of Mathematics in play way method but they have also been motivating them to explain the basic concepts through their working models / activities by organising " Math Melas" in schools. The parents, representatives of School Management Committees, prominent personalities are being invited at the " Math Melas". The students exhibit and explain their working models / activities with great confidence and even answer the counter queries by the visiting dignitaries.
The " Parho Punjab, Parhao Punjab" has not only been enhancing the learning level of the students but also bringing in change in the public perception about the education standards of the government schools. Now, it has started reversing the trend as the innovative activities under the project have started catching the attention of the private schools.
Divulging details, District Education Officer ( SE) Rakesh Bala and District Mentor ( Math) Gurnam Singh, said that on the request of school Principal of Saint Francis Convent School, Batala, the " Math Mela" was organised there by the students of Government Sr. Sec. School, Batala. It was virtually a " Student Exchange" Programme. As many as 96 students of the Govt. Sr. Sec. School, Batala put up stalls to exhibit as many as 80 working models and explained in detail the basic concepts of the Mathematics to the students of the host school. The staff and students of the host school were visibly amazed and elated to experience the confidence level of the students while explaining the different concepts of the mathematics. Some students have also been explaining the concepts fluently in English language.
P.J. Joseph, Principal, Saint Francis Convent School, Batala, while lauding the performance of the students, who have exhibited the working models / activities, said that the students of the host school had learnt a lot and the " Math Mela", would go a long way to motivate them to develop creativity. He also sought help from the District " Parho Punjab, Parhao Punjab" ( Mathematics) team to set up " Math Park" and " Math Lab" in the school. He also demanded to start telecast of Edusat teaching sessions in the school.
Deputy District Education Officer, Gurdaspur, Rakesh Gupta, Principal DIET, Balbir Singh, District Science Supervisor, Ramesh Pal, Principal, Govt. Sr. Sec. School, Batala, Anil Sharma and Block Mentors( Math), among others, were also present on the occasion.
