Need to have more inter-connected rivers
Fencing wire near Indo-Pak border submerged, possibility of smuggling chances
Ferozepur, August 22,2019: With the increase of water flowing, the fencing wire near Indo-Pak border Hussainiwala has submerged, there is possibility of smuggling of drugs, as recently there had been recovery of 12 packets of heroin in a vehicle tube from Sutlej River.
During the recent flood like situation in the border villages, certain check posts of the army – second defence line after the BSF jawans at the front have dipped under water and they have to shift back, to keep an eye of any movement or attempt of smuggling or entering of intruder, which has become a challenging task for the security forces.
On the other hand, there had been huge loss of standing crop of the farmers of the border villages. The crops stretching over hundreds of acres land near the bed of Sutlej was submerged while water had started flowing into villages.
The district administration was facing difficulties as the villagers were reluctant to vacate their houses. The administration claimed to have made all arrangements to accommodate people and their live stock.
According to information, the Sutlej river flow is also towards Pakistan and is reported to have affected the villagers on the other side. However, since the rivers have their natural course of flow, the Sutlej after zig-zag entry into Pakistan comes back to Indian side but mixed with the contaminated water of the Tanneries in Kasur, which too poses a threat of skin diseases in the border villages.
There is a need to form a long term and safe strategy to meet with any flood like situation in India, by making more inter-connected rivers.
