Mohali, December 6, 2019: Rajinder Gupta, Chairman, Trident Group, while speaking at the Textile Session at Progressive Punjab Investors Summit 2019 on Friday said women have played a major role in the textile industry in Punjab.
“Around 70 per cent of workers employed in the textile industry in the state are women. When women start earning, they play a major role in social development of communities and for this reason alone more and more women should be encouraged to work,” Gupta said.
“Women living in rural areas, who don’t have any other source of income, work for us in creating traditional handicrafts and this way employment is generated which is good for the economy,” He added.
Gupta said employment is not only generated in his factories but also at places from where they source their raw materials.
“The cotton we use to manufacture textiles is grown in rural Punjab and it generates employment as lot of workers are needed to sow the crop and then harvest it. So, if we set up a factory, there is a long chain of employment creation, starting from the base where the raw material is produced right up to where the final products are manufactured,” Gupta said.
He said there were 25,000 families which are working in his group and Trident Group exports to 120 countries earning a turnover of $1 billion.
Gupta also praised local workers, saying, “The learning curve of workers from Punjab is very high compared to their counterparts in other parts of the world. They grasp new technology very fast and this leads to higher efficiency and productivity.”
