Ferozepur : Shaheed Bhagat Singh Stadium is now a jail for curfew violators
Ferozepur, April 4, 2020: In the wake of the curfew imposed to control the outbreak of coronavirus, the Deputy Commissioner, Kulwant Singh has designated Shaheed Bhagat Singh Stadium as temporary jail to handle the people violating curfew orders and Superintendent Jail will be overall in charge of temporary jail.
DC said it is observed that some places are needed for the purpose of mass evacuation/detention during the maintenance of law and order. Therefore, in the exercise of the power conferred under sub-clause 2 & 3 of the Clause 6 of the Jail Manual, Punjab, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Stadium in Ferozepur City has been declared as Temporary Jail with effect from April 4, 2020, till further orders.
In the past, a number of cases have been registered against persons violating the curfew orders and strict restrictions have to be imposed as precautionary measures.
DC said, as a precautionary measure, besides lockdown, the curfew has also been imposed by the government, and extended up to April 14, to keep safe the people from pandemic coronavirus.
The stadium is situated in the heart of the city, which has produced a number of Olympians and besides various events from time to time, the Republic Day and Independence Day are also celebrated here. Perhaps this is the first time in the history of Ferozepur that the stadium has been designated as a jail.
Sat Pal Khera, President, Senior Citizens Forum said, to win over the corona crisis, it is a very good step to keep the curfew violators at such place and this is also the need of the hour. We have to take care of the interest of the nation and help the district administration. Each citizen should join hands to fight this crisis facing humanity.
