Dr. A.V. Anantaraman & Dr. Chandrasekhar Sankurathri (Right) chatting after the 25th Air India memorial service in Ahakista. Both men lost their wives and children in the tragedy.
Despite losing wife and two children in the Air India bombing above the Irish Sea on June 23, 1985, Dr. Chandrasekhar Sankurathri has forgiven the murderers. Widely known as the worst tragedy in the history of aviation terrorism before 9/11, the Air India bombing that left 329 people dead was blamed on the Sikh separatists seeking revenge against the Indian government.
His wife, Manjari, son Srikiran aged 6 and three-year-old daughter Sarada were on board Air India Flight 182. They were heading to summer vacation while Sankurathri stayed behind in Ottawa where he worked as a scientis t with Health Canada. He was supposed to join them later for a wedding in the family. Their bodies were never found.
Sankurathri, who has now become a philanthropist forgave the bombers long ago. "I only pray for their sanity and hope God will save them", he told this reporter. "They (terrorists) can never destroy love of a person. They have robbed happiness from my life, but couldn't destroy my love for others."
Sankurathri who resigned as a scientist and established a charitable foundation to help the needy children in rural India said that he decided to completely involve in "mission of love, compassion and caring others." On being asked where did this strenght come from he explained, "Everyday in life we see such acts, innocent people being killed or targeted for one reason or other. This is the world we live in. What is the use of being angry with those criminals? In that process will I gain anything? I feel that being angry with them I am the loser and I cannot be at peace. When I am not at peace with myself what can I do for others? Probably nothing. Instead of wasting my life being angry with them and wasting my life I have decided to completely involve myself in caring others who need my help."
As a spiritual person he thinks that God gave him that strength.
Sankurathri returned to Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh India in 1988 and established the Manjari Sankurathri Memorial Foundation in memory of his wife, whom he described as a compassionate and kind person. Apparently her legacy of human compassion was a driving force behind Sankurathri's decision to launch a foundation to help the poor. He acknowledged that he learnt many things from her, such as humility and caring. "Me and my wife used to discuss the unfortunate children who are orphans and children who are living in poverty. When I was searching for the purpose of my life I thought I should spend my life helping the children in need". He admitted that his personal loss made him more compassionate towards the poor and destitute.
He gradually opened a school in memory of his daughter to provide free education to poor children and later an institute of ophthalmology in memory of his son. He recalled that his son had an ambition to become a children's eye doctor and therefore dedicated the Ophthalmology Institute to Srikiran. "I derive the strength from the smiles of those children and happy faces of the elderly after their eye operations".
Sankurathri, who describes himself as "advocate of basic human rights for rural people" said that in the process he enjoys what he does because he could bring some change in the lives of these people.
He hardly followed the Air India investigation with any curiosity or hope and concentrated more on his charitable mission. " Whatever comes after the investigation would never bring my family back to me. But I believed that the government has a responsibility to conduct this and bring the justice. If they fail in delivering these goods they are guilty. History will judge them." He also believes that the outcome of the investigation would have been different if the victims were Anglo-Saxon. The western powers, he agrees, reacted differently to Air India episode as compared to 9/11, because "it happened to Air India and they believed that all the people are also Indians. This is clear indication of the double standards followed everywhere."

Love is Like a Butterfly: It goes where it pleases and it pleases wherever it goes...
A newly emerged butterfly can't fly immediately. Because inside the chrysalis, a developing butterfly waits to emerge with its wings collapsed around its body. When it finally breaks free of the pupa case, it greets the world with tiny, shrivelled wings
