Why women live longer___Women live longer than men partly because their immune systems age more slowly, a study suggests. As the body's defences weaken over time, men's increased susceptibility to disease shortens their lifespans, say Japanese scientists. Tests of immune function could give an indication of true biological age, they report in Immunity & Ageing journal. The immune system protects the body from infection and cancer, but causes disease when not properly regulated. The Japanese study set out to investigate the controversial question of whether age-related changes in the immune system could be responsible for the difference in average life expectancy between men and women. Prof Katsuiku Hirokawa of the Tokyo Medical and Dental University and colleagues analysed blood samples from 356 healthy men and women aged between 20 and 90. They measured levels of white blood cells and molecules called cytokines which interact with cells of the immune system to regulate the body's response to disease. In both sexes, the number of white blood cells per person declined with age as expected from previous studies. However, closer examination revealed differences between men and women in two key components of the immune system - T-cells, which protect the body from infection, and B-cells, which secrete antibodies.

Debate:Metro is not luxury but necessity for Chandigarh.

Metro rail is the most practical solution for Chandigarh. It will not only reduce the rush on the roads, accidents and pollution but also minimise the consumption of several thousand litters of petrol and diesel every day.

Chandigarh 114 km area, rank 33, elevation 350 meter and density 8400 km known as City Beautiful which was designed by Le Corbusier for 5 lakh population but it has crossed beyond limit. Growing population and vehicles in the city has compelled the Chandigarh Administration to implement Mass Rapid Transit System. Chandigarh administration has been planning underpasses, removal of roundabouts, trams and other modes. The underpasses are not viable solution as lot of money will have to be wasted by shifting underground sewerage and water supply pipes. But metro rail is the most practical soluti on for Chandigarh. It will not only reduce the rush on the roads, accidents and pollution but also minimise the consumption of several thousand litters of petrol and diesel every day. Once known as employees and gray heir city has changed rapidly and there is no alternative to metro rail to coup with the traffic hazarded especially at the peak hours. Other than peak hours one can still drive car at 5th gear that is the beauty of Chandigarh planning. An urban development ministry report says that Chandigarh has a ‘zero congestion’ index and the highest ‘walkablility’ index of 0.91 in the country. The ‘city bus transport supply’ index is only 17.54 as against 20 for Trivandrum and 43 for Delhi. The long trip length of an average of 14 kilometres and the average journey time in private mode of transport is between 5 to 17.5 minutes. A majority of the trips here are short one from 2.5 to 9.6 kilometres in length and about 80% trips can be completed within just 15 minutes. Keeping in view the above observations the demand of 60-70,000 PHPDT is justified whereas maximum traffic demand is estimated at 30,000 PHPDT by 2041. E Sreedharan, a metro expert has already rejected a metro for Chandigarh. Even than I am of the opinion that the proposal to introduce metro is in the right directions, much needed and a long term planning. Because we should not isolate Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula but should also include Buddi an industrial hub to attract tourists from all over the world. Later on it could be connected with Ludhiana, Ambala, Ropar and Patiala. The project will be joint venture of Chandigarh Administration, Punjab and Haryana and will cover the distance of 52.4 km both elevated and 40.4 k.m underground and the estimated coat is Rs.150 billion as under:-
Corridor 1: Khuda Lahora — IT Park (16.31 km]
Corridor 2: Motor Market — Maheshpur (7.8 km]
Corridor 3: Sukhna Lake — S.A.S. Nagar Railway Station (16.86 km)
Corridor 4: Dakshin Marg — Airport
Corridor 5: IT-Park — S.A.S. Nagar Sector 105
Corridor 6: Dadu Majra — Mohali Sector 93
Corridor 7: Zirakpur — Panchkula Bus Terminal
The Punjab government has already given green signal to the Ludhiana Metro project involving an investment cost of Rs 10,300 crore. The project is scheduled to be completed within the next five years. The Metro is expected to drastically reduce traffic congestion and pollution to the commuters of Ludhiana which has increased the vehicles from 10 lakh to 20 lakh in just 10 years. The main reasons as to why I.T. and multinational companies are not interested to invest in Chandigarh is the lack of International Air Port and metro for local travel. These are the basic needs for any multinational company to invest. This will not only bring the Chandigarh on the world map but also stop brain drain of the north. At present, well qualified students have to go to Delhi/Pune/Bangluru away from the north home town. In this way they could be adjusted here at tricity.

Love is Like a Butterfly: It goes where it pleases and it pleases wherever it goes...
A newly emerged butterfly can't fly immediately. Because inside the chrysalis, a developing butterfly waits to emerge with its wings collapsed around its body. When it finally breaks free of the pupa case, it greets the world with tiny, shrivelled wings
