Captain Amarinder Honours Gurmehar Kaur As Youth Icon
Chandigarh, May 27, 2017: Jalandhar born young girl Gurmehar Kaur who was in headlines due to her daring stand against RSS and ABVP and controversial remarks about the Pakistan and Kargil war, was honoured by CM Punjab Captain Aamarinder Singh here on Friday.
She was one of the top 30 young achievers of North India who were awarded by Hindustan Times at the HT Youth Forum function held here to honor them.
She was selected for award as writer and activist.
Gurmehar Kaur hit headlines as she was a part of the ‘Save DU Campaign’ following the clashes in Ramjas College in February 2017 where activists of the ABVP allegedly clashed with students, where JNU students Umar Khalid and Shehla Rashid were invited for a seminar.
Earlier, she was in the spotlight due to a video released by her on Facebook.
As part of the 'Fightback DU' campaign, Gurmehar Kaur's online post saying, "I am not afraid of ABVP," received many messages of support, but she was also trolled with threatening messages. Gurmehar, whose father died fighting militants in Jammu and Kashmir in 1999, finally withdrew from the campaign, and left Delhi.
Gurmehar Kaur was born to Rajvinder Kaur and Captain Mandeep Singh in Jalandhar. She completed her education at St. Joseph's Convent School, Jalandhar. Her father, Mandeep Singh, was one of the seven personnel killed after a Rashtriya Rifle camp was attacked by militants in Jammu and Kashmir on August 6, 1999.
