New Delhi, July 21, 2017: On the petition of voting rights to NRIs, the Centre has submitted in the Supreme Court that law is being amended to enable NRIs to vote in their own country.
The submission followed the SC asking the Centre as to why the Act was not amended by it to grant voting right to the NRIs.
The government then asked for two weeks to file reply entailing changes required to be made in the Peoples’ Representation Act.
The petition in this regard was filed in 2014.
The SC also asked the government about why it was delaying the required amendment despite repeated assurances since 2014.
