PAU organizes awareness camp on recommended Rabi crop varieties
Ludhiana, September 15, 2021: The Department of Extension Education, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), organized an awareness camp for the promotion of PAU recommended varieties for Rabi Crops on 13-09-2021 at village Nurpur Bet under the guidance of Dr. Kuldip Singh, Head Department of Extension Education, PAU, Ludhiana.
A total of 30 farmers along with other dignitaries attended the program.Dr. Davinder Singh outlined the objectives of the camp while highlighting the reasons for adoption of Nurpur Bet by PAU. He also encouraged the participants to buy PAU Vegetable Seed Kits as well as PAU recommended varieties.
Dr. Achla Sharma, Wheat Breeder enlightened the farmers about the new wheat varieties released by PAU i.e., PBW 803; useful for South-western districts, PBW 824; for early sowing and combating early heat, PBW 869; useful for sowing with a happy seeder and faster germination.
She also shed light on the “PBW 1 Chapati” variety specially developed for chapati making and motivated participants to adopt these varieties.Dr. Virendra Sardana, Principal Agronomist (Oilseed) enlightened the participants about the new varieties in oilseed crops developed by PAU.
He also briefed them about the canola varieties of raya and gobhi sarson and encouraged them to grow these for self-sufficiency as well as for marketing purposes.
Aman Sharma, Agricultural Development Officer briefed the farmers about the harmful effects of paddy straw burning and various other ways of paddy straw management. He also discussed different government schemes beneficial to farmers.
Gulneet Chahal, Assistant Director (Publications), sensitized the farmers about various PAU farm publications, encouraging them to enroll for membership and thus gain from timely scientific information coming straight from experts. She also urged the farmers to associate with the university by subscribing to PAU’s weekly digital newspaper, Kheti Sandesh, and logging on to the Facebook Live program every Thursday.
Dr. Kamalpreet while proposing the vote of thanks summarized the entire session and again motivated the farmers to grow the new varieties recommended by PAU. She also urged them to grow oilseed crops for self-sufficiency.
Students enrolled under Rural Agricultural Work Experience (RAWE) helped in organizing as well as in the smooth conduct of the event. PAU literature and vegetable seed kits were distributed among the farmers at the end.
