Ludhiana, May 20, 2022: Speaking during the PAU Live Programme, Dr GS Mangat, Additional Director of Research (Crop Improvement), Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), advised the farmers of Punjab to go in for direct seeding of rice to save water and labour.
He also advised transplanting ‘PR’ varieties (PR 121, PR 128, PR 129 and PR 130) after June 20. “The 25-30 days old nursery of PR 126 should be transplanted between June 25 and July 10 for higher paddy yields,” he said.
Giving a word caution to the farmers, Dr Mangat observed: “False smut and sheath blight diseases of rice show higher severity in early transplanted rice.”
Dr MS Bhullar, Head, Department of Agronomy, urged the farmers to follow PAU recommendations for weed management in DSR.Dr Buta Singh, Rice Breeder, stressed upon cultivating early maturing, high yielding ‘PR’ varieties because they require less water, result in minimum paddy straw and vacate field for wheat sowing due to early maturing of paddy.
Dr Nirmal Jaura and Dr Anil Sharma conducted the PAU Live Programme.
