Ferozepur, December 31, 2024: Computer teachers from across Punjab intensified their agitation under the banner of the Computer Teachers' Hunger Strike Committee, gathering in large numbers outside the Deputy Commissioner's office in Ferozepur. Carrying out a protest march with an 'effigy funeral' of the Punjab government, they burned symbolic bundles of brooms to voice their discontent.
The protestors accused the government of backtracking on its election promises. Despite multiple meetings with key ministers, including Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains, and Cabinet Minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal, the teachers claimed no concrete action had been taken to fulfill their demands.
The agitation, which began on September 1, includes a hunger strike at Sangrur’s DC office and a four-day protest outside Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s residence. Protestors highlighted the plight of their colleague, Joni Singla, who has been on a fast unto death since December 22, now entering its 10th day.
The teachers demand the restoration of benefits listed in their regularization orders, implementation of the 6th Pay Commission, and their merger into the Education Department. They also seek financial assistance and jobs for the families of deceased computer teachers.
Protestors criticized the CM for advocating against the Centre during farmers’ protests while ignoring their own grievances. They warned of a statewide agitation if their demands are not met promptly, holding the state government accountable for any escalation.
Leaders, including Lakhwinder Singh and Jatinder Sodhi, reiterated that their struggle would only end at a decisive point, with participation expanding to include families of the teachers.
