Bhakra Dam to Release More Water; Flood Alert Issued for Numerous Villages Along Sutlej

With relentless rain lashing Himachal Pradesh, the water level at Bhakra Dam has risen close to the danger mark, prompting the district administration in Rupnagar to issue a critical flood warning. The authorities have announced an increase in water release from the dam to between 80,000 and 85,000 cusecs, up from 75,000 cusecs. This surge poses a serious flood risk for villages along the Sutlej river, with residents urged to immediately move to safer locations.
Villages Most at Risk
The administration has specifically directed residents of low-lying villages in Nangal and Sri Anandpur Sahib sub-divisions to evacuate and seek shelter at relief camps set up by the district. Key villages under threat include:
Nangal region: Harsa Bela, Bela Ramgarh, Bela Dhyani (Upper & Lower), Sainsowal, Ailgarh, Bela Shiv Singh, Bhalan, Bhanam, Singhpura, Palasi, Tarf Majara, and Majari.
Sri Anandpur Sahib region: Burj, Chandpur Bela, Gajpur Bela, Shahpur Bela, Nikkuwal, Amar Pur Bela, and Lodhipur.
The warning also extends to all villages along the Sutlej in Rupnagar and Sri Chamkaur Sahib, whose residents are advised to remain vigilant and prioritize safety.
Preparedness and Public Advisory
Rupnagar’s Deputy Commissioner has cautioned that the rising water could enter homes and fields in both Nangal and Sri Anandpur Sahib.

The DC clarified that dam water flow is expected not to exceed headworks, urging caution but advising against panic. An updated list of affected villages suggested for evacuation will be announced soon.
