Amarinder
Chandigarh, May 3, 2016: Former Punjab Chief Minister and PPCC President, Capt. Amarinder Singh, has said that there is a palpable mood for a regime change in Punjab among the Punjabi NRIs and he was overwhelmed with the support that he and the Congress party had received here. Capt. Amarinder, who was in Los Angles on Monday, told a group of Punjabi newsmen from Canada and US, that during his various interactions with the diaspora in US, everyone had criticised the working of the Akali-BJP combine and batted for a progressive and visionary Congress government in the state. “Drug addiction, rampant corruption, unemployment, poor state of education and health and over all lawlessness in Punjab are on the top of the minds of the Punjabis settled hereâ€, he said. “I have met a lot people here and not one had anything positive to say about the present situation in Punjabâ€, he said adding that the diaspora was very optimistic about a turnaround with a Congress government at the helm. Replying to a question on prospects of AAP, Capt. Amarinder said the party on its own has no chance but it could fragment the anti Akali-BJP vote. “They can just harm us like the PPP did in the last assembly elections when it cornered 5.17% votesâ€, he said adding that while the Congress, which lost the elections by just a 0.08% votes, had increased its vote share in the 2012, the Akali-BJP’s share had gone down. He said in fact the Akali-BJP combine are now banking on AAP’s prospects of eating into the Congress vote share for their own victory. He cautioned NRIs against lending any support to AAP, as it could well pave a way for another Akali-BJP victory. “What Punjab needs today is a government that is committed to work for the people and the near 10 decade rule of Akali-BJP has proved that they aren’t the right choiceâ€, he said dubbing the combine’s last poll run as a “victory by defaultâ€. Responding to a question on the cancellation of his trip to Canada due to a case filed against him by Justice For Sikhs, Capt. Amarinder said, “its unfortunate that baseless charges are being raised against me ". He said his five years regime in Punjab was the “most peaceful†and these people (SFJ) were playing into hands of anti national forces by raising such issues. Maintaining that this would be his last run for elections, Capt. Amarinder said, “I’ve been a soldier and before I hang my boots, I desire to put a last ditch effort to pull back Punjab, its youths and farmers from the throes of drug addiction, unemployment, debt and suicidesâ€. He said the decade long Akali-BJP rule had dragged down Punjab from being the No 1 state to No 19. “I wish to see Punjab back in its gloryâ€, he said. -GP
