Chandigarh Bans Burning of Waste Materials to Combat Air Pollution
Chandigarh, March 25, 2025: The Chandigarh Administration has imposed a strict ban on the burning of waste materials to tackle the deteriorating air quality in the city. The order, issued by District Magistrate Nishant Kumar Yadav under Section 163 of the Bhartiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, will be in effect from March 27, 2025, to May 25, 2025.
According to the order, the burning of all types of waste, including garbage, crop residue, leaves, plastic, rubber, and other combustible materials, has been prohibited. The decision was made in response to increasing air pollution levels that pose severe health risks to residents and threaten the city's environment.
Residents and organizations are directed to dispose of waste through the designated collection system managed by the Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh. Local authorities will conduct regular inspections to ensure compliance, and violators will face strict action under Section 223 of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
However, the order excludes authorized waste incineration facilities operating with official permissions for waste treatment and disposal.
The administration has urged the public to cooperate in maintaining air quality and protecting public health. The order will be displayed at the District Magistrate’s office, the District Court, and other public places, as well as published in newspapers for public awareness.
