New Delhi, June 9, 2026: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across several parts of the country over the next five days as the southwest monsoon continues to advance rapidly.
According to the IMD, monsoon conditions are becoming favourable for further progress into Bihar, Jharkhand and parts of West Bengal within the next one to two days. The weather agency has predicted widespread rainfall across northeastern states, including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura, with isolated places likely to receive very heavy showers.
Heavy rain has also been forecast for Sikkim, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Kerala, coastal Karnataka, Lakshadweep and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands during the coming week.
Meanwhile, a fresh western disturbance is expected to affect northwestern India from June 11, bringing thunderstorms, gusty winds of up to 60 kmph and scattered rainfall to several regions. Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and Uttarakhand are likely to witness rain and hailstorm activity during this period.
The IMD has also predicted rainfall in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh over the next few days.
While Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and parts of northern India continue to reel under severe heatwave conditions, relief is expected from June 11 onwards. The weather department has forecast dust storms, thunderstorms and rain across these states between June 11 and June 15, bringing a significant drop in temperatures and respite from the intense summer heat.
