With 70.39 percent polling in Punjab, still there are two phases left for May 7 and May 12 before the final results are announced on May 16 fixed for counting of polled votes from the EVMs. Barring West Bengal, where the polling percentage is 81.35% as against 81.91% during 2009, Punjab is at second place with 70.39% polling. There is not too much increase in percentage as expected with the launching of SVEEP programme, honouring of first time voter with appreciation letter from ECI, involvement of social media. There is marginal increase in voting percentage – 4 per cent in Amritsar, 1% in Jalandhar, 2% in Anandpur Sahib, more than 5.22% in Ludhiana, 2.88% in Fatehgarh Sahib, 2.27% in Ferozepur, 0.4% in Sangrur and 0.41% in Patiala. While in rest of the constituencies, the polling graph has gone down – 2.73% in Gurdaspur, 2% in Khadoor Sahib, 2% each in Hoshiarpur and Anandpur Sahib, 1.07% in Faridkot, 4.74% in Bathinda. Ludhiana has, however been, the maximum increase of 5.22% but the tall claim of the ECI to have 10 per cent increase in polling could not be achieved so far as Punjab is concerned. Poll analysts are indecisive this time as the voter’s turnout not just beat the 2009 figures in certain segments. But the anti-incumbency factor in the minds of people is termed as against the ruling SAD-BJP in the state with a similar trend against the UPA at the centre. The voting was held in a single phase in all the 13 Lok Sabha constituencies. Total number of voters in the state is 1.95 crore, including 1.02 crore male and 92 lakh female voters. In 2009, polling had taken place in two phases, but this year it was held on a single day and during 2014, in Punjab State, there were 22,022 polling booths, 1,95,11,548 voters – 1,02,60,714 male, 92,51,005 female. Barring few incidents of clashes as usual in Moga, Patiala, Amritsar districts, the polling was by and large peaceful throughout the State. Modi Wave had a little impact in Punjab in view of anti-incumbency wave against the ruling party and the option left with the voters was only Congress and AAP followed by Independent candidates or BSP. Going by the number of contestants in 2014 poll, there was a increase from 218 in 2009 to 253 in 2014. However, with the entry of Aam Aadmi Party candidates, the election was interesting and would be biggest gainer while the Congress and SAD-BJP both the major political parties were at the setback. The fight has normally been seen between the Congress and SAD-BJP in Punjab but but the entry of AAP made the contest three-cornered in at least half the 13 constituencies. Social media, especially the Whats App application played a major role in creating awareness among the young voters and canvassing in favour of a particular candidate. SVEEP programme launched by the ECI too had played a role in creating interest of the voters besides making certain polling booths as mode and super-model and honouring of first-time voters with appreciation letter from ECI. So far as participation of single women contestant in 1977 Lok sAbha poll, this time as many as 13 women were in fray in the elections. The Congress and the Akalis fielded two women candidates each, while all the other parties together put up 5 women candidates, while there were 4 independent candidates in the fray.
