April.22, 2020: The State government has created history by procuring record 15.38 Lakh MT of wheat out of 17.56 Lakh MT arrived in grain markets of the State within a week amid COVID-19 threat, whereas last year till today only 4.83 Lakh MT wheat had arrived and 3.02 Lakh MT was procured and the procurement process is going on smoothly in the State, said Kahan Singh Pannu Secretary Agriculture, while interacting with media at grain market Sirhind today, where he has come on surprise checking to take stock of the procurement process.
He said that in the State on 85 Lakh Acre of land wheat has been cultivated and 130 Lakh MT of wheat is expected to come to the grain markets of State and State government is committed to procure every grain of wheat. He said that payment approximately worth Rs. 25000/- crore have to be made to the farmers of the State and approximately Rs.700 Crore to the labourers of the State, which will be economically helpful to them in the hour of crisis due to COVID-19 threat.
