INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY EMERGING FOR ENHANCING ECONOMIC, ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL SUSTAINABILITY WORLD
BATHINDA, MAY 18, 2020: Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2020 was celebrated by the Institution of Engineers (India) Bathinda centre here on Monday.
May 17 is celebrated as the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, as it marks the anniversary of the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention and the creation of the International Telecommunication Union. The first international telegraph convention was signed in Paris on May 17, 1865.
On this occasion, keynote address was delivered by Dr. Savina Bansal, Campus Director Giani Zail Singh Campus College of Engg & Tech and Dean (Academic Affairs) of Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Technical University Bathinda.
While speaking on this year theme of “Connect 2030: ICTs (INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY) for the Sustainable Development Goals”, which focuses on ICT developments essential for a transition to smart and sustainable development; Dr Savina Bansal said that in the present scenario when the world is reeling under Corona pandemic, ICT has played the key role in delivering valuable and correct information and has further helped us to connect with our loved ones globally in the absence of any physical connect with them. During the ongoing lockdown ICT has made it possible for the manpower to work from home and education sector to shift on digital classrooms mode. The world is connected despite being geographically distant because today we can connect to each other at any time using technology, said Bansal. She further said that the usage of advanced technology means to foster economic, environmental and social sustainability in next few years shall remain the world’s focus.
Dr. Bansal also highlighted the ICT advances for transition to smart and sustainable development by embarking upon the five strategic goals of growth, inclusiveness, sustainability, innovation and partnership. She appreciated the contributions made by ‘Digital India’ Program of the union government and said that today leadership in telecommunication is becoming essential parameter of governance.
More than 80 persons including Professional Engineers and senior educationists of the country including those from Punjab University; Punjabi UNIVERSITY, PATIALA, MRSPTU Bathinda; SLIET LONGOWAL, BBSBEC Fatehgarh Sahib, BFCET Deon, Physical Research Lab Ahmedabad; Hyderabad and Bangalore attended the seminar.
MRSPTU, Dean Planning and Development and Chairman Bathinda Centre, Dr. Buta Singh Sidhu welcomed the participants, while Dr. Jagtar Singh Honorary secretary Bathinda Centre proposed a vote of thanks.
International days are the occasions to educate the public on matters of concern, to mobilize political will and resources to challenge global problems and to celebrate and reinforce accomplishments of humanity. World Communication and Information Society day is celebrated every year on 17th May, to exhibit the power of telecommunication in raising awareness about the positive impact made by internet and other means of Information and communication technologies in bringing the world closer. This day was coined by the United Nations General Assembly.
