Chandigarh, August 20, 2020: Dr. Dharamvira Gandhi, former Member Parliament, Patiala, today applauded the unwavering stand taken by Shri Prashant Bhushan on his sticking firmly to his tweets, regarding the ‘prevailing corruption in judiciary, during his appearance in contempt case in the Supreme Court today. Shri Prashant Bhushan is a known crusader against high level political, bureaucratic and corporate corruption and a great votary of democratic and human rights in the country. It is on the records of judicial history of the country that Mr.Bhushan has been struggling consistently for judicial accountability and transparency for several years, Dr. Gandhi added. But suddenly and to everybody’s surprise, he has been held guilty of contempt of court for the issues he had raised several years ago.
"I will not apologize for what I believe was my highest duty towards my conscience and the constitution and the court is free to award any legal punishment, it feels is adequate. Elaborating further,” What I feel sorry is that, my spirit of raising these issues has not been correctly understood and appreciated “ he argued.
We are passing through difficult times and people like Mr. Prashant Bhushan are an asset to democracy and nation to safeguard the constitution and fundamental rights of the people enshrined in it, Dr. Gandhi said. He called upon the legal fraternity and enlightened citizens to come forward against the erosion of democratic space in the country and preserve pluralism, diversity, freedom of expression, dissent, diversity and pluralistic ethos of the country.
