Ludhiana, October 25, 2020: Covid restraints notwithstanding, some Alumni of SCD Govt. College, Ludhiana did not forget to remember the legendry Alumnus of the college poet Sahir Ludhianvi on his death anniversary today. Led by Principal Dharam Singh Sandhu, some college teachers and alumni they paid floral tributes at the poet’s stone memorial in the college. Sahir studied in pre 1947 years in the college.
Randhir Kanwal (of Dhawani Musicals) reiterated the message in Sahir’s hit song “Saathi haath brahaana Saaathi re - Ek akela thakk jayega mil kar bojh uthana” for Film Naya Daur -1958. Together, we can carry the burden of challenges ahead.
Alumni Coordinator Brij Bhushan Goyal quoted the poet’s couplets against war hysteria and communal hatred. He spoke about poet’s message from his immortal poem ‘Virsa’(Inheritance): Ye vatan teri merii nasl ki jagir nahin,sainkdon naslon ki mehnat ne sanvara hai ise-This nation is not a ‘feudal grant’ to our present race. We have inherited this nation built together by hard work and sacrifices of hundreds of races on this soil.Dr. Kamal Kishore, HOD Maths Deptt. and also an Alumnus quoted Sahir’s song from the Film Dhool Ka Phool (1959) : Tu aman ka, aur sulaah ka, armaan banega,Insaan ki, aulad hai, insaan banega-Tu hindu banega, na musalman banega--You are a dialogue messenger of peace and harmony,get grow up to become neither a Hindu nor a Muslim, you are born of a human, grow up to be a human being only.
Principal Dr. Sandhu informed that college has earmarked a separate spot for Books written by Sahir and also written on him besides college also maintains a botanical rose garden in poet’s name. Next year on Sahir’s 100th Birth anniversary college is planning befitting remembrance. Dr. Ashwani Bhalla thanked the Alumni association for their efforts in remembering the poet.
