Amritsar, 23 December: The Amritsar Mayor Karamjit Singh Rintu along with Congress councilors was on one day hunger-strike on Wednesday in Company Bagh. He made this move on Kisaan Diwas to lend his support to the protesting farmers against the three farm laws passed by the union government.
“We are supporting the genuine demands of our farmers. The three laws passed by Modi government are not only anti-farmers but also unconstitutional. Thus, central government must revoke these laws immediately,” the statement given by Rintu while talking to reporters at protest site. In his statements he further said that Being Mayor of Amritsar, he can proudly say that thousands of people from this city are contributing in their own way to these protests. Thousands of farmers from Amritsar, Taran Tarn and Gurdaspur districts are sitting in Delhi and various other protest sites against these laws. We are sitting on hunger-strike to express our genuine concern for these farmers and their cause.
If BJP is really serious about resolving the issue, the central government must stop this propaganda and deter its cadre from labeling our farmers as Naxalites & Terrorists.
Taking pot-shots against BJP’s state leadership, Rintu asserted that those who have not won a single election in their life are misleading people through false & malicious propaganda.
“He comes from an agricultural family and he can understand the pain and the agony, the farmers are going through with these laws. But BJP leadership of Amritsar has nothing to do with farmers. They do not know anything about agriculture but still pressing the propaganda at Central leadership’s behest,” Rintu said making a veiled attack on BJP’s press interactions. “I would also appeal the union government to call the Winter Session of Parliament and repeal these draconian laws. Since, these laws were an assault on the federal structure of our democracy, the Punjab government under the leadership of Captain Amarinder Singh had negated them but I feel this is not enough and union government must abrogate these laws completely,” Rintu said. He also expressed resentment against the “vindictive IT raids” on the leading Arhtiyas of Punjab.
