British Foreign Minister Dominic Raab speaking in Parliament
Britain raised issue of farmers protest with India, claims British Foreign Minister
London, January 19, 2021 : British Foreign Minister Dominic Raab has claimed that he had raised issue of peaceful protests by farmers on the outskirts of Indian National Capital with Indian Foreign Minister Jaishanker during his visit to India in the month of December.
He made this startling disclosure while replying to a question raised by British MP Tan Dhesi in Parliament.
In reply to Dhesi Dominic Raab said that he understands concerns of the members and he had discussed the protests with Foreign Minister Jaishankar when he had visited India in December.
“of course this is a major government led reform reducing subsidies as part of the liberalization process but he makes some important points about freedom of protests and the sensitivity. Of course India’s Politics is very much our politics but we do also need to respect their own democratic process,”quipped Raab.
Earlier Dhesi raised the issue of peaceful farmers protests in India in British Parliament and said that more than 100 members of this house signed a cross party letter to the Prime Minister about our anxieties for the peacefully protesting farmers in India and we await eagerly his response.
He questioned Secretary of State that if he agrees that its extremely concerning to hear alarming reports of harassment and intimidation by the authorities there, who have started issuing notices to peaceful protesters, union leaders and human rights activists ?
