FIR filed against 'The Wire' editor for farmer death tweet
New Delhi, January 31, 2021: A day after Delhi Police picked up two journalists Mandeep Punia and Dharmendra from Singhu border for ‘misbehaving’ with cops, the Uttar Pradesh police has filed FIR against ‘The Wire’ editor Siddharth Varadarajan for tweeting an articile published by The Wire that reported the death of Navreet Singh, killed during the Tractor Rally on Republic Day.
In his tweet, Siddharth founding editor of The Wire wrote, “Hardeep Singh Dibdiba, grandfather of the youth killed in tractor parade, levels a sensational charge—that a doctor who was part of the autopsy told him a bullet caused the injuries “but my hands are tied” while sharing Wire story.
Following the FIR, he tweeted the though the case is against him but the intention behind police move is to ensure that deceased farmer family members stay mum.
“In UP, it is a crime for media to report statements of relatives of a dead person if they question a postmortem or police version of cause of death. I think this new ‘law’ has come in the wake of godi media coverage of Sushant Singh Rajput postmortem,” he further wrote.
Make no mistake, the case is against me but the intention is to ensure the dead man's family shuts up.
Navreet Singh's family's doubts and concerns may be valid or not but denying them the right to air those adds to their grief.https://t.co/UKDweWyUpI
