Dera Bassi: 11-year-old boy died, five injured in roof collapse

Mohali, April 11, 2021:
An 11-year-old boy died and five persons of a family got injured after a mud roof collapsed in Mirpur village of Dera Bassi here.
As per the information, the incident occurred at Saturday midnight when all the family members were sleeping in their house. Ram Kumar (35) along with his wife, Geeta (30) and three children - Harjit, Amit and Adisha, was sleeping in a room while his mother was sleeping outside the room.
The neighbors gathered around the house when they heard a loud noise. They had to put a lot of effort to rescue the family members with the help of a ladder as they were trapped under 2 feet deep debris. All the injured family members were rushed to the civil hospital in Dera Bassi. The doctors referred them to GMCH, Sector 32 in Chandigarh. The deceased also underwent an operation by the doctors but he could not survive. The other two children, Amit and Adisha, were discharged after a few hours as they had sustained minor injuries.
Dera Bassi Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Kuldeep Bawa, said, “There was a ‘kachha’ roof on the house due to which it got weakened. The boy died due to suffocation as he got trapped under the debris. However, no one from the family sustained physical injuries. The other family members have been discharged from the GMCH, Sector 32. The family refused for the post mortem of the deceased.”
On getting the information of the mud roof collapse, Shiromani Akali Dal MLA NK Sharma also visited the spot and blamed Congress Government for the same. He said the state government failed to provide expenses to the poor for their mud roofs following which the family had to meet this mishap. “As per the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yozna, the family had to get Rs 1.5 lakh four years back but the state government had not released the funds for the poor families of Dera Bassi. I demand the family should be given full compensation and a government job to a family member should also be given by the government,” said NK Sharma.
Congress halqa incharge from Zirakpur, Deepinder Singh Dhillon announced that the victim family would be provided with the compensation at the earliest from the CM relief fund.
