Mohali, April 19, 2021:
The elections of President and senior vice president of Kharar municipal council have been postponed for May 3 on following high drama and ruckus by the Congress and SAD councilors in the house on Monday.
SAD in-charge from Kharar, Ranjit Singh Gill was expecting this morning before going to the house that he would be the president as he had support of 15 councillors (including 7 independents). Interestingly, the SAD councilors and their independent supporters were seen wearing saffron color as a dress code to show their support on one side. But when the meeting of the house started, heated arguments took place between the councilors of Congress and SAD. The drama, which continued for around 30 minutes, witnessed abuses hurled by councilors, and tables and chairs thrown towards each other. The councilors broke the tables in the committee room and some of them even tried to attack SDM Kharar, Himanshu Jain, who was present there for conducting the elections. He along with his officials had to leave the committee room from the back door during the ruckus. When the SDM left, some councillors even broke his table.
The Congress councillors claimed that all 8 independents were their members only and would elect their president, but they alleged that SAD had lured the independent councillors by offering them money.
The SAD councillors led by Prof Prem Singh Chandumajra, said that the ruling party misused their power to halt the election of their president. They said the Congress councillors abused them and even threw chairs on us. They also requested the authorities to check the videography and demanded that cases should be registered against the guilty. The SAD councillors staged a protest outside the house after the whole drama and alleged that the Congress again murdered the democracy.
It is to be noted that the results of Kharar municipal council elections were declared on February 17. There was a hung house as out of total 27 seats, congress won 10 seats, while SAD won 8 seats, one went to AAP and 8 seats were won by independents.
SDM Himanshu Jain said that the elections had been postponed for May 3 due to law and order situation. He said that a report in this regard would be submitted to the Mohali DC and so that appropriate action would be taken against the guilty.
