PAU holds training webinar on improved cultivation techniques for paddy
Ludhiana, June 18, 2021: The Department of Extension Education, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), organized an online farmer training webinar on the “Successful Cultivation of Paddy Crop” as a part of the project funded by NABARD. The webinar was organized under the aegis of the Directorate of Extension Education in which 50 farmers, scientists and Agriculture Development Officers participated.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Kuldeep Singh, Head, Department of Extension Education, motivated the farmers to adopt recommended cultivation techniques for paddy crop. He urged them to follow water saving technologies recommended by PAU.
Dr KB Singh, Principal Soil Scientist, explained recommended fertilizer application practices in paddy. He also highlighted the importance of micro-nutrients in realizing better crop yield.
Dr Amit Kaul, Extension Scientist, Department of Agronomy, explained various agronomic practices like field preparation, sowing time, seed rate, irrigation and weed control for successful paddy cultivation, especially, direct seeded rice (DSR) method.
Rasheed Lekhi, Deputy Director Manager, NABARD, discussed the importance of natural resources and called upon for their conservation for clean environment. He lauded the efforts of PAU scientists for the success of the project.
Dr Dharminder Singh, Senior Extension Scientist, stressed upon adopting short duration varieties of paddy to get better returns and for efficient straw management. He further said that recommended varieties of paddy by PAU not only would give comparable yield but also reduce the straw load.
Dr Lakhwinder Kaur, Extension Scientist, encouraged the farmers to remain in touch with agricultural experts through e-sources during this COVID pandemic. Later, she proposed a vote of thanks.
