Chandigarh, October 25, 2021: The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today called for a special assembly session to reject the centre’s decision to extend the jurisdiction of the Border Security Force (BSF) over ten districts in the State even as it demanded that the Vidhan Sabha also set aside the three farm laws as well as amendments made to the APMC Act by the Capt Amarinder Singh led government in 2017.
The SAD delegation, including Prof Prem Singh Chandumajra and Dr Daljit Singh Cheema, also asked the Congress government to set its own house in order.
The delegation members pointed out that former chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh had supported the extension of the jurisdiction of the BSF.
“So did Amritsar mp Gurjit Singh Aujla and Minister Rana Gurjit Singh”.
The delegation also asked chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi to clarify about his meeting with home minister Amit Shah as there were apprehensions in the minds of Punjabis that he had agreed to the move and only then was it announced by the central government.
“It also pointed out that former PCC President Sunil Jakhar had also accused the chief minister of handing over half of Punjab to the centre”.
Prof Chandumajra later said that the chief minister had failed to convince the meeting that he had not colluded with the centre and agreed to extension of central jurisdiction in Punjab.
“The entire sequence of events makes it clear that Channi has sold off the interests of the State to the centre”.
Prof Chandumajra also appreciated all the parties for raising the need to strengthen the federal system. He said it was the SAD which had always fought for retaining the federal character of the country as espoused in the constitution.
“We even had to fight the entire system but continued to raise this demand. Today our demand stands vindicated with all parties raising the same issue. The centre has been eroding the federal character of the country by compromising the riparian principle, denying Punjab its capital and Punjabi speaking areas, directly interfering in agriculture which is a State subject and now in policing which is also the duty of the State”.
Prof Chandumajra while asking all parties to unite against interference of the centre in State affairs, said efforts were on to make Punjab a union territory by handing it over its policing to para-military forces.
He said to avert these designs all parties should unite and approach other States and ask them to forcefully reject any move which impinged on their rights like the three agri bills as well as extension of central jurisdiction along the borders.
Dr Daljit Cheema while speaking also questioned the rationale behind the move to extend the jurisdiction of the BSF to fifty kilometers from the international border.
He said the BSF was supposed to guard the borders and should not be involved in policing activities fifty km away from the borders.
Dr Cheema also raised the issue of tweets by PCC President Navjot Sidhu’s Strategic Advisor Mohammad Mustafa which had claimed that an ISI agent had been running the Home Ministry during Capt Amarinder’s tenure as chief minister.
He said present Home minister Sukhjinder Randhawa had also tweeted to this effect before deleting the same.
Dr Cheema asked the chief minister to set his house in order, saying the State would be embarrassed if asked by the centre about this state of affairs at a time when it was fighting for its rights. EOM
