Chandigarh, March 26, 2022:
Punjab and Haryana High Court’s advocate HC Arora has appealed to Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann to remove the exemption to MLAs from payment of Income Tax.
While welcoming the decision of Mann to implement ‘one MLA one Pension’, Arora requested the Punjab CM to also take a step towards payment of income tax by the MLAs.
By writing a letter to Bhagwant Mann, HC Arora said, “At the outset, I may congratulate you on your very bold and fair decision to amend the Punjab Legislative Assembly (Salaries and Allowances of Members) Act, 1942, to put a cap on the maximum pension allowable to an ex-member of Legislative assembly.”
He added, “I may bring it to your notice that even the Judges of various High Courts, as well as the Judges of the Supreme Court of India, are themselves paying the income tax on their salaries. That being so, to confer such a benefit on the MLAs by exempting them from payment of income tax on their salaries is totally discriminatory, and reflects the State Legislature in a very poor light, as it is the MLAs sitting in the State Assembly who themselves introduced such provision for conferring such benefit on them.”
