Media has pivotal role to play in shaping the socio-political framework in Indian democracy: Harpal Cheema
Finance minister attended special function organised to honour Padma Jagjit Singh Dardi

Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, on Saturday, participated in a function organised at Ratan Professional College Sohana by Disha Women Welfare Trust to honour senior journalist S. Jagjit Singh Dardi, Chairman, Charhdikala Time TV and Charhdikala Group of Newspapers for receiving the Padma Shri Award.
Speaking on the occasion, Harpal Singh Cheema said that society is ever-changing with time. In this situation, the media takes a lead to give a new direction to the society which is why the press is attributed as the fourth pillar of democracy. He said that the press was the mirror of society and its duty was to present the true picture of the society. He said that media should be the voice of the common man by connecting with society. In our country, the media has also played a leading role in the freedom struggle. He said that it was the media that portrayed the plight of the people in the country and inspired them to fight for independence. He said that the role of media was to act more wisely and diligently in view of the increasing crime in our society.
The Minister was accompanied by MLA Mohali Mr. Kulwant Singh, MLA Dera Bassi Mr. Kuljit Singh Randhawa, MLA Rajpura Ms. Neena Mittal, and MLA Jalalabad Jagdeep Kamboj Goldy.
A documentary on the life and struggle of senior journalist Dardi was also showcased. Dardi also shared his experience in journalism.
On this occasion Hardeep Kaur Virk, President of Disha Women Welfare Trust (Regd.) Punjab thanked the audience.
