Ludhiana, May 20, 2024: The Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has predicted that heat wave to severe heat wave conditions are likely to persist at many places in the state during the next 4-5 days,"
In this regard, PAU issued an advisory to farmers amid the ongoing heat wave in the region.
"Temperature in the region is being observed by more than 4 degree centigrade higher than normal. Daytime temperature is consistently being observed above 43 degree centigrade and night time above 26 degree centigrade from the last few days. However, in some parts of the state daytime temperature is upto 45-46 degree centigrade. Above normal day time temperature is leading to intense heat wave conditions. As clear and dry weather conditions are likely to prevail during the coming days, hence there is prediction of heat wave to severe heat wave conditions at many places in the state during the next 4-5 days,"
In view of this, farmers are advised to apply light irrigation to the crops frequently during early morning or evening hours.
Due to intense heat conditions, especially between 11.00 a.m. and 4.00 p.m., farmers are advised to shift their working hours before 11.00 a.m. and after 4.00 p.m. to avoid adverse impacts of heat stress on their health.
In addition, they should take frequent breaks in the shade. They are also advised to take plenty of liquids and keep themselves hydrated along with a healthy diet.
They are also advised to provide water to the animals frequently along with a healthy diet, so that animal production and health is not adversely affected by the heat wave conditions.
