Ferozepur, 16 September 2024: The 30th World Ozone Day was celebrated at Dev Samaj College for Women, by organizing various educational activities to raise awareness about the importance of the ozone layer, under the tutelage of Principal Dr. Sangeeta.
World Ozone Day, also known as the International Ozone Day for the Preservation of Ozone Layer is celebrated every year on 16th September. In 1994, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) proclaimed 16th September the International for the Preservation of Ozone Layer.
The Postgraduate Science Departments of the college marked the occasion by hosting a range of events, including quizzes, poster-making, PowerPoint presentations, essay writing, rangoli, slogan-writing competitions, and an exhibition. Both faculty members and students from the science departments participated enthusiastically in the celebrations.
Key coordinators for the events included S.S. Gill from the Physics Department, Dr Nishant Juneja from the Mathematics Department, Mrs Neha Gupta from the Chemistry Department, Dr Manish Kumar from the Botany Department, and Dr Mokshi from the Zoology Department.
The Physics Department, in collaboration with the C.V. Raman Club and IQAC, organized a poster competition focused on ozone depletion and its harmful effects. 50 undergraduate students participated in this competition, with Sukhmandeep Kaur (B.Sc. Part III) and Harmandeep Kaur (B.Sc. Part I) winning first place. Simran and Suhana secured second place, while Manisha, Shivani, Kashish, and Disha (B.Sc. Part III) took third place.
In addition, the Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, and Mathematics Departments conducted essay writing, slogan writing, rangoli-making, and PowerPoint presentation competitions. The essay competition centred on the theme “Montreal Protocol: Ozone Layer Restoration and Climate Change Mitigation,” contributing to awareness efforts around combating climate change.
B.Sc. Medical and M.Sc. Zoology students showcased initiatives on ozone conservation and zero waste, emphasizing the need to reduce pollution to protect the ozone layer and safeguard the planet.
Principal Dr. Sangeeta praised the science departments for their efforts in organizing the events, while Chairman Nirmal Singh Dhillon extended his congratulations to all participants. These activities were an integral part of the college’s mission to raise awareness about climate change and environmental conservation, she added.
