Ferozepur, November 12, 2024: Due to sustained efforts by the Ferozepur police teams, stubble burning incidents in Ferozepur have dropped significantly—down 62% from 2,260 cases in 2023 to 863 in 2024. However, the number of cases registered against violators has increased by 700%, from 93 to 661, highlighting a strengthened enforcement approach.
Soumya Mishra, Senior Superintendent of Police informed about the severe environmental and health hazards caused by stubble burning, including pollution, road accidents, and other diseases. In response, the Ferozepur Police have launched extensive efforts to prevent stubble burning by creating special teams that operate under the supervision of district gazetted officers to patrol and monitor the area.
These special teams are actively visiting villages to educate farmers on the harmful effects of stubble burning. They emphasize how it degrades soil quality, spreads pollution-related illnesses harmful to children and the elderly, and increases the risk of road accidents due to smoke. Many farmers have expressed their support for these preventive efforts.
When reports of stubble burning are received, the police teams, often assisted by the Punjab State Remote Sensing Centre (PSRSC), act quickly to extinguish fires and file cases against violators under Supreme Court directives. Meanwhile, progressive farmers who manage crop residue using modern techniques are honoured with gifts and appreciation.
To further reinforce these efforts, the Ferozepur Police have held meetings with farmer unions, village committees, and combined harvester operators to encourage sustainable stubble management methods. The district administration has coordinated with the agriculture department to ensure machinery is available to farmers as an alternative to burning.
