Chandigarh, February 13, 2025 – Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Giani Raghbir Singh, has strongly opposed the removal of Giani Harpreet Singh from his position at Takht Sri Damdama Sahib by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC).
In a social media post, Jathedar Raghbir Singh expressed deep sorrow over recent developments, stating that the process and rationale behind Giani Harpreet Singh’s removal were unjust. He pointed out that decisions taken on December 2, 2024, at Sri Akal Takht Sahib, in alignment with Panthic traditions, indicated a systematic effort to target Singh Sahibs.
He further criticized the media trial conducted against Giani Harpreet Singh, alleging that an 18-year-old personal matter was deliberately misrepresented to malign him. Despite his call for an impartial inquiry through an SGPC-formed committee, the decision to remove Giani Harpreet Singh was pushed forward, bypassing the authority of Sri Akal Takht Sahib.
Jathedar Raghbir Singh condemned the move as "highly unfortunate and damaging to the independent existence of the Takht Sahibs." He reiterated that only Sri Akal Takht Sahib holds the authority to investigate allegations against any Jathedar and lamented that such actions set a dangerous precedent.
The controversy surrounding Giani Harpreet Singh’s ousting has sparked strong reactions, raising concerns over the autonomy and integrity of Sikh religious institutions.
