Rana Sodhi raises Farmers' crop loss issue from Ferozepur with Punjab Governor
Ferozepur, April 22, 2025: The issue of widespread crop and stubble fires in the Ferozepur region has been brought to the attention of Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit by a delegation of BJP leaders. The delegation met with the Governor on Tuesday at Raj Bhavan in Chandigarh, urging immediate intervention and compensation for affected farmers.
Leading the delegation, BJP National Executive Special Invitee Rana Gurmeet Singh Sodhi said that hundreds of acres of wheat crops and stubble have been destroyed by fire in the Guru Har Sahai and Zira constituencies. "Despite the devastation, district administration officials remained silent spectators," he alleged.
Sodhi added that fellow BJP leaders Fatehjung Bajwa, Keval Singh Dhillon, and Manjeet Singh Rai accompanied him during a visit to the affected villages, where they personally met with distressed farmers. “Their pain is heartbreaking. Shockingly, neither the Deputy Commissioner nor the ADC visited the sites to assess the damage,” he stated.
He criticized the state government for claiming to be farmer-friendly while failing to take concrete steps in times of crisis. The delegation demanded immediate compensation of ₹50,000 per acre for wheat crops and ₹20,000 per acre for stubble loss, without awaiting formal crop assessment (girdawari).
Rana Sodhi said the Governor had assured the delegation that appropriate action would be taken soon to address their concerns and support the affected farmers.
