Chandigarh, April 30, 2025: The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Wednesday adjourned the hearing in a plea filed by Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal seeking an NIA probe into an attack on him at the Golden Temple after the National Investigation Agency (NIA) sought more time to file its reply. The matter was heard by Justice Tribhuvan Dahiya.
The petition stems from an incident where Badal, the former Punjab Deputy Chief Minister, was targeted in a shooting attempt by former militant Narain Singh Chaura while performing ‘sewa’ as part of a religious penance at the Golden Temple.
The attack was thwarted by security personnel, and Chaura was arrested. Badal has since alleged bias, political interference, and lapses in the Punjab Police investigation, claiming delays and omission of crucial evidence.
He has urged the court to transfer the probe to a central agency like the CBI or NIA to ensure an impartial investigation, citing the release of the prime accused on bail on March 25, 2025, as evidence of a lackluster approach.
The court had previously issued notices to the Punjab government and CBI on April 4, 2025, to respond to the plea. The case continues to draw attention due to its political and religious implications.
