Himachal CM Flags BBMB Injustice Amid Ongoing Punjab-Haryana Water Dispute

Shimla (Himachal Pradesh), May 3, 2025: Amid the ongoing water-sharing dispute between Haryana and Punjab over Bhakra dam resources, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has voiced concern over his state being sidelined in the allocation of water from the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB).
Speaking to the media, CM Sukhu said, “Most of the water that is coming has been divided between Haryana, Punjab, and Rajasthan. When we ask for our share from BBMB, we don’t even get that.”
Emphasizing that Himachal Pradesh had sacrificed land for the creation of the Bhakra project, Sukhu noted that despite this, the current conflict remains primarily between Punjab and Haryana. “Punjab and Haryana are our brothers—they should work together to solve this issue,” he said.
The Chief Minister urged both states to be more inclusive of Himachal’s concerns during BBMB meetings. “When we come for the BBMB meeting, they should cooperate to protect the rights of Himachal Pradesh as well,” he added.

The remarks highlight a longstanding grievance of Himachal Pradesh, which has often claimed inadequate compensation and representation in decisions related to the Bhakra Beas project—despite contributing land and resources to its construction.
The Bhakra Beas Management Board, under the Ministry of Power, is responsible for regulating water and power distribution from the Bhakra and Beas projects among partner states.
