Chandigarh slum-free drive intensifies: 2,500 huts demolished in Sector-25

Chandigarh, May 6, 2025 – In a major push towards making Chandigarh a slum-free city, the administration on Tuesday carried out a massive demolition drive in Sector-25, bringing down 2,500 slum dwellings.
The operation began early in the morning with a heavy deployment of police and administrative officials.
Residents of the slum colony, who had earlier received eviction notices, were seen vacating the area voluntarily. Many people had already packed up their belongings on Monday and loaded them into tempos and carts, anticipating the action. No resistance was reported during the eviction.
“People were seen salvaging bricks, sheets, and other essentials, trying to figure out where they could rebuild their lives,” a local eyewitness said. This is being termed one of the largest slum demolition drives in the city’s history, following earlier similar action in Sanjay Colony, Industrial Area Phase-1.
While the administration maintains that the demolition is part of its long-term goal of eliminating illegal settlements and improving urban planning, the sudden loss of shelter has left many families in distress.
“We have nowhere to go now,” said a woman who was seen sitting with her children by the roadside.
Officials have confirmed that the slum-free campaign will continue in other areas in the coming weeks.
