PAU-KVK organises Field Day on Hybrid Onion Varieties POH-1, PRO-7
Ferozepur, May 15, 2025: Punjab Agricultural University - Krishi Vigyan Kendra (PAU-KVK), Ferozepur, organised a Field Day on May 25, 2025, at village Sodhewala to promote awareness about the hybrid onion variety POH-1 and variety PRO-7. The event saw the active participation of around 35 farmers from the region.
The program commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Gurmail Singh, Deputy Director (Training), PAU-KVK, Ferozepur. He emphasised the importance of PAU-recommended vegetable varieties, particularly onions, for both domestic use and commercial cultivation.
Dr. Bhallan Singh Sekhon, Assistant Professor of Vegetable Science, elaborated on the advanced hybrid and improved onion varieties developed by PAU, Ludhiana. He highlighted that the POH-1 hybrid produces light red, large, round bulbs with tight necks and has low sprouting tendencies. The average yield of this variety is 221 quintals per acre. Similarly, PRO-7 produces red, medium to large-sized bulbs with good storage capacity and an average yield of 159 quintals per acre.
Dr. Simranjit Kaur, Assistant Professor (Plant Protection), provided key insights on seed treatment, identification of pest and disease attacks, and integrated pest management (IPM) in onions and upcoming Kharif crops like paddy and basmati.
Farmers engaged in interactive discussions with experts and expressed satisfaction with the PAU-recommended onion varieties, appreciating their high yield potential and storage qualities.
