Zira Liquor Factory Case : Next NGT hearing fixed for July 8, Sanjha Morcha vows to continue protest

Ferozepur, May 19, 2025: After nearly 2.5 years of ongoing legal proceedings and persistent protests, the case regarding the closure of the controversial Zira liquor factory has reached its final stages. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has now scheduled the next and possibly final hearing for July 8, 2025, reigniting hope among local residents and environmental activists for a conclusive decision.
The Sanjha Morcha Zira, a united front of local villagers and activists, has been spearheading the protest since July 24, 2022. The target of the agitation is the Malbros International Private Limited distillery-cum-ethanol plant located in Mansurwal village, Ferozepur. Protesters allege that the factory has caused severe environmental damage, particularly contaminating groundwater and soil in over 44 surrounding villages. It was originally established as a distillery in 2006, the plant was converted into an ethanol unit in 2014. Locals have long accused the facility of discharging untreated effluents, leading to widespread pollution.
In January 2023, Punjab Chief Minister announced the immediate closure of the plant. However, official closure orders were never issued, resulting in continued court hearings and public outrage.
In October 2023, the NGT ordered the Punjab government to supply safe drinking water to the affected residents following a government report confirming groundwater contamination. The previous scheduled hearing on February 24, 2025, was deferred.
Leaders including Jagtar Singh, Fateh Singh, Gurjant Singh, Gurdeep Singh, Raghbir Singh, and Advocate Deepak Kumar have regularly attended the hearings.
Sanjha Morcha leaders said, “We will not end our protest until this factory is permanently shut down. The damage to the air, water, and soil is irreparable. We urge all Punjabis to continue supporting us as they have since Day 1.” They emphasized that the case is now in its final stage and a decision could come any time within the next 1–2 months.
The NGT’s July 8, 2025 hearing is expected to be pivotal, with hopes high for a judgment in the interest of public health and environmental safety, said Roman Brar
Sanjha Morcha has reiterated its commitment to peaceful protest and pledged to keep the public informed with timely updates.
